Chomp Chomp BBQ – Is This The Best Sambal Stingray Stall at Bedok 85 Hawker Centre?

During my recent trip to Bedok 85 (Fengshan Market), I got to check out Chomp Chomp BBQ, a popular stall that sells delicious sambal stingray.

I have not tried the other sambal stingrays at Bedok 85, but based on Google reviews it seems that Chomp Chomp BBQ is the most popular stall for this dish here.

Indeed, when I visited at 6.30pm on a Saturday, they had a longer queue than nearby BBQ seafood stalls. It took around 30 minutes for my sambal stingray to be served.

The stall’s name suggests that it used to be located at Chomp Chomp Food Centre.

When ordering, you need to tell the staff your table number because they will bring the food to your table. They will also inform you of the waiting time, which was quite accurate in my case.

Chomp Chomp BBQ is best known their Hotplate Sambal Stingray ($12/$15/$20), but they also sell a variety of other hotplate dishes like BBQ Sotong ($12/$15/$20), BBQ Crayfish ($6 per 100g), BBQ Chilli Prawn ($18/$25/$35), and Hotplate Beancurd ($12/$15).

Their zi char dishes are popular too. Check out their Cereal Prawn ($20/$25/$30), Sweet & Sour Chicken ($15/$20/$25), La La ($12/$15/$20), Prawn Omelette ($8/$10), and many more.

Hotplate Sambal Stingray

I knew my Hotplate Sambal Stingray ($12) was arriving when I heard the sounds of the sizzling hotplate!

The meat was satisfyingly tender and moist with a smooth texture that felt wonderful in my mouth. And I loved how I could taste the feisty sambal flavour with every bite!

Compared to other sambal stingrays I’ve tried, this was probably the most well-marinated one. I think it’s because the meat is thinner, which allows the umami flavours of the sambal and other seasonings to permeate it thoroughly.

Note that the dish packs quite a bit of heat, so if you can’t take spicy food you may want to request for less sambal chilli (not sure if that’s possible), or have a large glass of cold drink at hand to douse the fire in your throat / tummy.

Their chinchalok sauce (made from fermented shrimps, lime, and onions) was good! It had a pleasant sweet and piquant flavour that brought an extra dimension to the stingray.

My only qualm was that I wished they were more generous with the onions – there was only a handful of onion strips on my stingray that I could literally count with one hand (ok maybe at most two hands).

Conclusion

If you are visiting Bedok 85 for the first time and are unsure of which stingray stall to try, go for Chomp Chomp BBQ. Take my word for it, you will not regret your decision. I only managed to check out the sambal stingray during my visit, but I’m looking forward to check out their other dishes. Try to go on weekdays or during non-peak hours on the weekends to avoid the long waiting time.
