BBQ Seafood – One Of The Best Sambal Stingray In Singapore, At Taman Jurong Food Centre

BBQ Seafood is a famous hawker stall at Taman Jurong Food Centre that serves one of the best sambal stingray in Singapore. Expect a long queue when you visit, especially during dinner peak hours. This article was last updated on 02 September 2020.

Unlike other barbecue seafood stalls that open late into the night, BBQ Seafood closes at 8.30pm daily.

You will need to tell the staff your table number when ordering so that they can deliver the food to you afterwards.

Menu

Other than their signature Sambal Stingray ($10/$13) dish, the stall also sells Sambal Crayfish (3 for $15), Sambal Sotong ($12), Prawns ($15) and a variety of fish (white fish, red snapper, rabbit fish).

There are two vegetables dishes available: Sambal Kangkong ($7) and Sambal Petai ($7).

I think they used to sell lala (clams) too but it has been crossed out on the menu.

Sambal Stingray

I ordered the $10 Sambal Stingray, which I find to be a decent sized portion to share with one other person. Go for the $13 portion if you’re a big eater.

I knew that my stingray was arriving when I heard the sizzling sounds of the hot plate!

It was served with a kaffir lime on the side, which I squeezed all over the fish to give it extra flavour.

The stingray meat was thick and juicy with an enticing smokey flavour – very satisfying!

The slather of sambal sauce covering the fish was savoury and feisty, but not too spicy. The raw onion slices provided balance for the strong flavours.

I enjoyed eating the stingray with the dipping sauce of pickled onions and lime juice, which had a pleasant sweet-tangy taste.

Sambal Sotong

The Sambal Sotong ($12) was another winner. I liked how the squids were evenly coated with the sauce, with the rich sambal flavour permeating through the meat. They tasted very fresh and had the perfect chewy texture. I’ve eaten here many times before, and the squids have never been overcooked until they become too rubbery or tough to chew.

Sambal Kangkong

The Sambal Kangkong ($7), or water spinach, was fresh and tasty. It had a sweet crunchy texture, and was ideal for eating with the hot white rice.

Sambal Petai

I like eating the Sambal Petai ($7) too, which is crunchy and feisty, with a pungent-savoury flavour. I’m a fan of this dish but I know some people are not used to its taste.

Conclusion

BBQ Seafood serves hearty barbecue seafood dishes that are perfectly cooked. While they are best known for their sambal stingray, their other dishes are good too. I normally visit the stall at around 5.30pm for an early dinner so that I can avoid the queue. During this time of the day, the food will usually be served in less than 15 minutes. The stall starts getting busy from 6.30pm onwards.
