Yit Foh Wanton Mee (益和云吞面) – Delicious Malaysian Style Wanton Noodles (RM6.00) Found In Johor Bahru

While researching for breakfast spots near KSL City Mall in Johor Bahru, I came across Restoran Yit Foh Wanton Mee (益和云吞面), a street restaurant just five minutes’ walk away from the mall. I decided to give it a try, and luckily I was not disappointed.

Restoran Yit Foh Wanton Mee (益和云吞面)

Restoran Yit Foh Wanton Mee is a famous restaurant in Taman Century, Johor Bahru that serves Malaysian style wanton mee (dumpling noodles). It was founded by Mr Lee Yok Kiong in 1970.

The restaurant’s egg wanton noodles (全蛋面) are produced in their own factory using Mr Lee’s traditional recipe.

The wanton noodles used to be cooked at the front of the restaurant, but since 2015 the staff have been cooking the noodles in a small kitchen at the back. This resulted in more dining space for customers.

Other than the Taman Century branch, there are several other branches in Johor Bahru and Malacca. You can click here to see the full list of branches.

Old School Restaurant

Many parking lots

Yit Foh is an old school Chinese restaurant with a clean and spacious interior. After looking through the menu, I went to the counter to place my order with a very polite staff.

I was given a number plate after paying, and the noodles were served to our table just five minutes later.

Wanton Mee (Non-Spicy)

Because I was going for a massage at Thai Odyssey KSL later, I ordered a small non-spicy Wanton Mee (RM6). If you are a big eater, I recommend ordering the large size since it is only RM2 more expensive.

The noodles were cooked very well. They were tasty and had great bite, unlike some other wanton noodles which are bland and tacky.

The sauce was savoury and fragrant, complementing the noodles very well. The char siew slices were decent but a little dry.

I added some green chilli to further enhance the taste of the dish.

The wanton soup was delicious! It had a savoury-sweet flavour along with a light sesame oil fragrance. The wantons in the soup had super smooth skin, and the meat fillings were fresh and chewy.

Wanton Mee (Spicy)

The wife had the spicy Wanton Mee (RM6). Even for two foodies who love spicy food, we found the noodles to be pretty feisty.

However, we both agreed that the spicy noodles were more delicious and satisfying than the non-spicy noodles. Therefore, if you can take spicy food, I strongly recommend ordering the spicy version.

Wantons (Non-Spicy, Dry)

We ordered a plate of small Dry Wantons (RM3) to share. I was a little surprised when the dish arrived, because this “small” dish consists of ten pieces of wantons.

I really enjoyed eating the wantons with the savoury sesame oil. The skins were very smooth, and the meat fillings were tasty and savoury. However, if I had to choose, I would say that the soup wantons tasted better.

Conclusion

Restoran Yit Foh Wanton Mee is a great place to enjoy delicious and affordable wanton noodles, and I’m happy to have discovered this eatery in Johor Bahru. I’ve heard that the fried wantons are really good as well so I’ll be checking them out the next time I visit. The restaurant closes at 4.30am so you can come here for supper too.
