Tan Yu Opens at Westgate Mall – Famous Mala Grilled Fish Restaurant With Over 180 Outlets in China

Good news for Westies! After weeks of delay, Tan Yu has opened their second branch at Westgate shopping mall in Jurong on 19th August 2020. Update (16 May 2020): Tan Yu is now providing islandwide delivery! You can order via this link: https://inline.app/order/Tanyu

Tan Yu (探鱼)

Tan Yu (探鱼) is a Chinese restaurant that originated from Shenzhen. It has over 180 outlets in China.

The restaurant opened its first branch in Singapore at 313@Somerset in December 2017.

I really enjoy going to Tan Yu because I love eating spicy food and the mala grilled fish here is super satisfying.

Even though Tan Yu has been around for over 1.5 years, it is still extremely popular.

Whenever I visit the restaurant, there are always throngs of people waiting outside. I usually have to queue for at least one hour.

Yes I know that’s pretty crazy. Nowadays I try to go during off peak hours to avoid the horrendous queue.

Westgate Outlet Grand Opening on 19 August 2019

On 27 May 2019, Tan Yu held a contest asking their followers to guess the new branch’s location.

Not surprisingly, enthusiastic foodies quickly discovered its location, which was B1-01/02 of Westgate shopping mall in Jurong.

On 15 July 2019, Tan Yu announced that the Westgate branch’s grand opening will be on 16 July 2019!

To celebrate the opening, Tan Yu will be offering the attractive promotions below:
16 July to 18 July: 32% discount
19 July to 21 July: 22% discount

Update 16 August 2019:
On 16 August 2019, after a LONG one month delay, Tan Yu has finally announced that the Westgate branch’s grand opening will be on 19 August 2019!

To celebrate the opening, Tan Yu will be offering the attractive promotions below:
19 August to 20 August: 32% discount

Popular Dishes

The Limbo Fish with Spicy Sauce ($45.90) was actually not as spicy as it looked.

The fish meat was very tender and sweet, and tasted great with the feisty mala sauce.

I added crab sticks and potatoes slices as side ingredients and they tasted awesome too.

The Grilled Fish With Green Pepper, Limbo Fish ($45.90) is my favourite dish at Tan Yu.

The “green pepper” flavour was significantly less spicy than the “spicy sauce” flavour. On the whole the dish had a very good balance of spicy and savoury flavours.

The limbo fish was very juicy and tender. This will be a good choice for people who can’t take overly spicy food.

Conclusion

I am definitely looking forward to the opening of Tan Yu Westgate on 19 August 2019 as it is one of my favourite restaurants in Singapore. Hopefully the queue will not be as long as the one at 313@Somerset, though I guess that’s probably a futile wish. You can call or use the Restaurants.sg link below to make reservations.
