Joo Siah Bak Koot Teh – Long-standing Bak Kut Teh Hawker Stall With History Of Over 30 Years

I have been a fan of Joo Siah Bak Koot Teh for many years. Originally located in Yuhua Market Hawker Centre, they moved to a nearby coffeeshop at Block 349 in recent years.

Joo Siah Bak Koot Teh serves the Teochew style peppery bak kut teh. They have been around for over 30 years and today the stall is run by second-generation hawker Mr Chua.

I recently went down on a Sunday at 11am and the coffeeshop was almost fully packed; by the time I left at around 11.30am every single table was occupied.

My favourite main dishes are the Pork Ribs Soup ($5.50 / $7.50), Braised Pork Leg ($5.50 / $7.50) and Braised Pork Belly ($5.50 / $7.50).

For side dishes I usually get the Preserved Vegetables ($1 to $3) and Dough Fritters ($1).

Soup is refillable, but it is self-service: you need to walk to the stall and hope that one of the pots on the counter is filled with the broth.

If not, you need to get the attention of one of the staff who will grudgingly top it up for you.

Pork Ribs Soup

My favourite part of Joo Siah’s Pork Ribs Soup ($5.50) is the peppery broth. It is rich and cloudy with a very addictive savoury-sweet taste.

However, during my recent visit, the pork ribs meat was not very tender, and it had a “porky” aftertaste. The tasty soup more than made up for it though.

Pork Tenderloin Soup

The wife likes ordering the Pork Tenderloin Soup ($5.50) because it is convenient to eat, and the meat is slightly more tender.

Braised Pork Belly

Joo Siah recently started serving the Braised Pork Belly ($5.50). It was really good! I loved the lor bak’s super tender meat and melt-in-mouth fatty skin. Sorry cholesterol level!

Conclusion

Joo Siah Bak Koot Teh has been serving quality bak kut teh since I started visiting them from almost 10 years ago. Personally, I like coming here in the early morning to get my peppery bkt fix. Some of the staff do not have the best attitudes, but generally the service has improved significantly over the years.
