虾之家 (House Of Shrimps) – Prawn Mee Stall Opens At Ghim Moh Food Centre (Takes Over Prawn Village 虾乡味)

虾之家 (House Of Shrimps) is a new prawn noodle stall at Ghim Moh Food Centre. It takes over the space previously occupied by the popular Prawn Village (虾乡味), which closed down in March when owner Mr Anson Loo returned to nursing to join the fight against Covid-19.

This new stall features a bright orange signboard emblazoned with their name “虾之家”, which translates to “House of Shrimps”.

虾之家 opened in May, and appears to be as popular as their predecessor. When I went down on a weekday at 12pm, there was a long line of about 15 people queueing at the stall.

Menu

Fans of Prawn Village will be happy to know that 虾之家 features an almost identical menu.

The Traditional Penang Hokkien Mee ($3) comes with dark orange Penang style prawn stock.

The Signature Prawn Noodles ($5) is served in a larger bowl with more ingredients, and is available in soup or dry versions.

The toppings menu is identical to Prawn Village’s, offering Leek Fishcake ($1.40), Pork Ribs ($1), Sliced Abalone ($1), Pig Skin ($1), etc.

For a taste of everything, go for the All-In-One Prawn Noodles ($7).

Signature Prawn Noodles

It was my first time visiting and I decided to try the Signature Prawn Noodles ($5), which comes with prawns, pork slices, fishcakes, eggs, and pork lard.

The broth was flavourful with a pleasant sweetness, without being too intense. Some people may find it slightly salty but I was fine with the taste.

The large prawns were fresh and crunchy, with the heads still attached so you can suck up their briny goodness.

The other ingredients like fishcakes, eggs, pork slices and fried pork lard helped to add flavour and texture to the dish.

Overall this was a satisfying bowl of prawn noodles worth queueing for. My only regret was not adding pork ribs!

Conclusion

Unfortunately I have not tried the Prawn Village (虾乡味) prawn noodles before so I cannot comment on how 虾之家 (House of Shrimp) compares. However, it is safe to say that my bowl of prawn noodles was delicious and value-for-money. I will be returning again to check out their Penang style prawn mee.
