Rung Reung 荣泰 (Bangkok) – Famous Tom Yum Pork Noodles at Sukhumvit Soi 26, Delicious Street Food!

The wife and I enjoy hunting for good food during our holidays, and during one of our food crawls in Bangkok we visited Rung Reung (荣泰), a nondescript restaurant located along Sukhumvit Soi 26.

“Original” restaurant with blue canvas is on the left

Rung Reung (also known as Rung Rueang or Rung Ruang) is a small Sino-Thai restaurant in Bangkok that serves tasty and affordable Thai style pork noodles, similar to Singapore’s Teochew Bak Chor Mee.

We were surprised to find two restaurants with the exact same name upon arriving. It turns out that after the original proprietor died, his two sons took over the family business and expanded the space.

However, they got into a family dispute, which resulted in a partition being built in the middle of the expanded restaurant. Today, the “original” Rung Reung is the one at the corner with the blue canvas, while the adjacent one has the red canvas.

The original restaurant is supposed to serve better tasting noodles, but has a smaller seating capacity. The other restaurant has the “Shell Shuan Shim” award, which is the Thai equivalent of Michelin Star.

However, do not fret too much about which restaurant to eat at, because according to online reviews there isn’t much difference between the two.

Do take note that both joints are extremely popular with locals, so you should ideally visit before 11.30am or after 1pm to avoid the lunch crowd.

We were lucky enough to get seats straightaway at the original restaurant when we arrived on a Thursday at around 1pm.

The restaurant was packed with locals and we were probably the only tourists inside – which is always a good sign!

The level of service was better than what I had expected from a dingy street side restaurant, and our food came very promptly after ordering. Some of the staff spoke English too.

Menu + How To Order

Rung Reung’s simple menu offers just a few items: Pork Noodles, Crispy Fish Skin (THB 20), and a small selection of drinks.

Below is a guide to ordering your noodles:

Step 1. First, pick from a selection of Rice Noodles (small, medium, big, or short), Egg Noodles, or Glass Noodles.

Step 2. Next, select whether you would like it dry or with soup (you can choose the spicy Tom Yum flavour for both options).

Step 3. Finally, choose your serving size (small, medium or large), and you’re done!

Tom Yam Noodle With Soup

Because we had still feeling slightly full from a meal earlier, the wife and I ordered a medium Tom Yum Noodle With Soup (THB 60) to share. For the noodles we went with glass noodles.

This sumptuous bowl of pork noodles came with generous servings of sliced and minced pork, fishcake, fish balls, and pork liver slices.

The highlight for me was the coarse minced pork which was surprisingly fresh and juicy. The pork liver slices were firm and tasty, and the fish balls had a nice bouncy texture.

The soup was very fragrant, with a rich meaty flavour, pleasant tangy taste, and moderate feistiness.

Interestingly, the restaurant offers four types of condiments: dried chilli flakes, crushed peanuts, pickled chillies and even sugar.

Apparently sugar is a commonly used condiment in Thailand. However, I only added a bit of chilli flakes to spice up the dish more.

Fish Cracker and Longan Drink

While waiting for our noodles to arrive, we helped ourselves to the Fish Cracker (THB 20). These crispy fish skins were cheap, tasty and extremely addictive! Pro-tip: dip it in the noodle soup to enjoy a different taste.

The Longan (THB 10) drink was perfect for drinking in Bangkok’s super hot weather. It was served ice cold and had a pleasant sweet taste. And it only cost THB 10!

Directions to Rung Reung

The restaurant is a short four-minute walk from Phrom Phong BTS station (Exit 4). It is beside the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Sukhumvit Bangkok.

Conclusion

It was worth checking out the delicious noodles at Rung Reung. While the Tom Yum noodles didn’t blow me away, it was still quite satisfying. Note that the restaurant closes early at 5pm every day.
