Kope Hya Tai Kee (Bangkok) – 67 Year Old Coffeeshop Serving Delicious Thai Style Breakfast

Out of the many Bangkok eateries, most tourists are probably very familiar with On Lok Yun. However, they may not know about Kope Hya Tai Kee, which is another old-school coffee house nearby in the Old City district.

Kope Hya Tai Kee

Kope Hya Tai Kee is a popular Chinese-style coffeeshop in Bangkok that serves a variety of Thai and Asian fusion style dishes. It also offers a selection of specialty iced coffees and teas.

It is near the iconic Giant Swing and is just steps away from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration City Hall building.

It used to be quite troublesome to get to this coffee house, but it is now just a ten-minute walk away from Sam Yot MRT Station on the new Blue Line extension.

From what I know, there are several other Kope Hya Tai Kee branches in Bangkok. However, the branch beside City Hall is the most well-known.

Old School Coffeeshop

Kope Hya Tai Kee was founded in 1952 and exudes an old school charm with its wooden furnishings and ceiling fans. However, it has been renovated several times over the years so the interior feels quite new.

The wife and I came here for breakfast at about 9am on a Sunday and the coffeeshop was fully packed. There was also a queue of about 10 people at the counter.

I decided to wait for a table first while the wife went to queue. I was lucky to get a table after waiting for about 10 minutes.

Menu

The menu offers an interesting variety of drinks like Thai Style Coffee Blend, Iced Milk Ceylon Tea, Iced Lemon Ceylon Tea, Honey and Lime Soda, and unique creations like Iced Green Tea with Milk.

There is a wide selection of breakfast items. The signature item here is the “Kai Kra Ta”, a savoury dish that consists of fried eggs and minced meat. There are also various Western-Thai fusion dishes.

The main dishes consists of Chinese-Thai style dishes like Fried Rice, Green Curry dishes, Tom Yum Noodles, Soft Boiled Rice with Prawn, Minced Pork Noodles, etc.

The menu has English translations so it was easy to read.

How to Order

The left side of the counter is for ordering, the right side is for collecting your food and drinks

The cutlery is kept in a cabinet near the counter

First, you need to find a table. This can be quite challenging, especially during peak hours.

After that, you will need to order and pay for your food at the payment counter.

The staff will call out your table number once your order is ready. You can then collect your food / drinks from the collection counter.

The wife and I decided to split tasks so that we could get our food more quickly. While I was waiting for a table, the wife queued at the counter first.

Kai Kra Ta + Baguette Sandwich Set

We ordered the signature Kai Kra Ta and Baguette Sandwich set (THB85). The Kai Kra Ta comprises a pair of fried eggs topped with minced meat and spices, served in a metal pan. This interesting dish is paired with a baguette on the side.

The eggs were surprisingly tasty and tasted great with the savoury minced meat! The wife and I were hooked from the first bite and finished the whole dish in a hurry.

The baguette was served with a sliced sausage. It was quite crispy and delicious too.

Breakfast Set 2

We also had the Breakfast Set 2 (THB119) which consists of fried egg, sausage, ham, bacon, butter toast and salad.

My favourite was the butter toast, which had a nice crisp texture and a pleasant buttery flavour. The sausages were quite tasty as well.

We also added extra fish fillets (THB59). These crispy fried treats were surprisingly savoury and juicy.

On the whole this was a very satisfying and affordable breakfast set.

Cha Ceylon Yen Thai Milk Tea

Finally we washed down everything with a big glass of Cha Ceylon Yen Thai Milk Tea (THB50) each.

Looks can be deceiving, and the large glass actually contained plenty of crushed ice. But at least the milk tea was very sweet, milky and fragrant – classic Thai style!

Conclusion

Personally, I feel that Kope Hya Tai Kee is a great spot to enjoy a delicious and satisfying breakfast in Bangkok. The prices are also quite affordable; our sumptuous breakfast spread only cost around THB350. I am looking forward to check out the other main dishes on the menu during my next visit. Note that if you buy online from Klook, the Kai Kra Ta and Drink Set costs just THB110 (usual price THB145).
