Yang Jia Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee – Young Hawker Couple Serves Up Hokkien Mee With Good Wok Hei

A new Hokkien Mee stall has opened at Taman Jurong Food Centre! Westies can now get their fried prawn noodles fix from Yang Jia Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee (楊家炒福建虾面). This article was last updated on 02 September 2020.

This new stall opened just a few weeks ago, and is helmed by young couple Bernard and Sarah. Bernard is in charge of taking orders, while Sarah cooks the Hokkien Mee in a traditional metal wok.

You will be given a number after ordering. Once your noodles is ready, Bernard will call out your number for you to collect your food.

Be prepared to wait because each round of cooking only serves around five to six plates. I had to wait almost 20 minutes when I went down on a weekday afternoon.

Menu

The Hokkien Mee is sold in $4, $5, $6 and 7 portions. Opeh leaf is used for the $6 and $7 portions, but it was not available during my visit.

Some people believe that not only is Opeh leaf a symbol of authentic Hokkien Mee, it also enhances the flavour of the dish.

Hopefully I get to try the Opeh leaf Hokkien Mee soon so I can compare it with their normal version served on plates.

The menu also features a Fried Oyster dish but it was blocked out.

Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee

My Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee ($5) was served steaming hot fresh off the wok. I liked that it was moist and glistening with pork lard oil, which is how I like my Hokkien Mee cooked.

The noodles were packed full of robust and rich savoury flavours! They had a smooth and oily texture that made it so satisfying to slurp them down.

And to my pleasant surprise, the dish had very good wok hei – which is that wonderful hint of smokiness and charred aroma that fleetingly cloaks every strand of noodles.

The chilli was sweet and not too spicy – perfect for mixing in with the noodles. I also squeezed lime juice over the noodles to add some zest and flavour.

The prawns and squids were good “Hokkien-Mee-standard” and complemented the noodles nicely.

On the whole, I was thoroughly impressed that a young lady could cook up such a well-executed plate of Hokkien Mee, which honestly tasted like it had been cooked by a seasoned hawker.

Conclusion

I’m happy to have discovered another gem at Taman Jurong Food Centre! It would be good if this new stall can improve their efficiency and reduce waiting time, which I’m sure they will eventually. I am definitely visiting Yang Jia again soon to scarf down another plate of delicious Hokkien Mee with good wok hei.
