Zhao An Granny Grass Jelly – Handmade Grass Jelly With Velvety Smooth Texture, At Golden Mile Food Centre

After downing my delicious prawn noodles from One Prawn Noodle, I decided to order one bowl of ice-cold chin chow from the famous Zhao An Granny Grass Jelly to complete my meal.

Zhao An Granny Grass Jelly is a hawker stall at Golden Mile known for their delicious handmade grass jelly. It is manned by Mr Yeo Hwee Seng.

The history of the stall can be traced back to 1946, when Mr Yeo’s late grandmother started selling grass jelly on the streets in post-war Singapore to support her family.

In 1996, Mr Yeo left his job in the electronics industry and opened his own grass jelly stall at Golden Mile Food Centre after refining his grandmother’s recipe.

Every step of his grass jelly making process is done by hand, from boiling the chin chow leaves to filtering them and turning them into jelly.

I believe this is currently the only stall in Singapore to hand make grass jelly on a daily basis.

Menu

Each bowl of grass jelly costs $1.60. There are four classic toppings available: Nata de coco, Palm Seeds (attap seeds), Longans, and Sea Coconuts.

The grass jelly costs $2.20 with one topping, $2.50 with two toppings, and $2.90 with three toppings.

Takeaway costs an additional 20 cents.

They also sell a large portion chin chow at $5.50, which is available for takeaway only.

You can also choose to enjoy their grass jelly as a drink with chin chow strips.

Grass Jelly

I bought the Grass Jelly with Longan Topping ($2.20). I thought it was pretty cool that the grass jelly was scooped from an old-school wooden bucket and served in an oriental ceramic bowl with a metal spoon.

The grass jelly came in large wobbly chunks. It had a velvety smooth and super soft texture that felt really good in my mouth.

Compared to factory-made grass jelly, Zhao An’s version had a richer herbal fragrance, which was balanced nicely by the sugar syrup’s delicate sweetness.

It came with chunks of crumbly shaved ice which helped to keep the dessert cool.

Eaten together with the sweet and juicy longans, this was one refreshing dessert perfect for Singapore’s hot weather.

Conclusion

Zhao An Granny Grass Jelly offers a soothing old-school dessert that definitely tastes better than factory-made grass jelly. It’s a pleasant treat to enjoy after your meal at Golden Mile Food Centre.
