Xin Sheng Gor Hiong Prawn Cracker – 2nd Gen Hawker Sells Handmade Hgoh Hiang, Delivers To Jurong Area

There are two “Xin Sheng Gor Hiong Prawn Cracker” stalls in Singapore, located at Taman Jurong Food Centre and Boon Lay Place Food Village. I wrote about the Boon Lay branch before and this is my review of the Taman Jurong stall.

Xin Sheng Gor Hiong Prawn Cracker is a second-generation hawker stall that sells handmade ngoh hiang items. The Taman Jurong stall is located on the third floor of the hawker centre, near the escalator.

For those who do not know, “Ngoh Hiang” is a unique Hokkien and Teochew dish that comprises a variety of fried ingredients like ngoh hiang (after which it is named), prawn cracker, fried chicken wing, squid, century egg, fried beancurd, fish cake, etc. The dish is usually served with fried bee hoon and a sweet chili sauce.

Xin Sheng Gor Hiong has a history of over 70 years. It had humble beginnings as a pushcart stall, before moving to Boon Lay Place Village. The Taman Jurong branch is its second outlet.

Till today, the stall still keeps up the tradition of making their ngoh hiang items by hand.

The stall has been featured by various media outlets before. They have also won several food accolades over the years, as can be seen on their storefront and wall.

I like their big and neat menu, which has pictures and prices of all the ingredients clearly printed. A minimum order of $3 applies. The menu also has a write up of the stall’s history.

Delivery

For this period, Xin Sheng Gor Hiong is providing delivery for residents staying at Jurong West, Boon Lay, and Taman Jurong daily from 12pm till 8pm.

The delivery fee is $5 nett and there is a minimum purchase of $10.

To order, you can Whatsapp Anthony (+65 9646 8348), Mei Yin (+65 9618 4142) or Ah Mei (+65 9001 7915).

You can also find Xin Sheng Gor Hiong on GrabFood and Foodpanda.

Verdict

Compared to the Boon Lay stall, I felt that the Taman Jurong outlet had some hits and misses.

I really liked the Crispy Prawn Cracker ($1.50), which produced a good crackling as I bit into it. The first sensation was the crunch, followed by the robust fragrance of prawn.

The Fishball ($0.40) was pretty large and springy.

The Fried Bee Hoon ($1.20) is a must-order staple at this stall. It was very well cooked and had a umami-like taste to it. Highly addictive.

The remaining ingredients like the Ngoh Hiong ($1.30) and Taiwan Sausage ($1.30) were tasty too, but were not as good as those sold at the Boon Lay outlet. I found them to be a little dense and doughy.

The sweet chilli sauce was really tasty and complemented all the ingredients nicely.

Conclusion

Overall, Xin Sheng Gor Hiong Prawn Cracker at Taman Jurong serves pretty satisfying ngoh hiang, though a few of the ingredients fell short of my expectations. Perhaps they were just having an off day during this tough CB period. I will be returning again to give the food another try. I’ve heard that their handmade sausages (灌肠) are good and will be checking that out. Note that I ordered takeaway and used my own plates for the pictures above.
