HEYTEA 喜茶 (Singapore) – Famous Cheese Tea Shop From China Opens at Westgate With New Flavours!

Seems like Jurong is becoming one of the most happening neighbourhoods in Singapore. HEYTEA (喜茶) has just opened its third branch at Westgate mall; this is only a few months after the opening of CHICHA San Chen at Jem shopping mall. Update (01 June 2020): Heytea outlets will reopen for delivery starting 02 June 2020.

HEYTEA (喜茶)

HEYTEA (喜茶) is one of China’s most popular bubble tea shops. It is known as the “Starbucks of China” and is famous for its delicious cheese tea drinks.

They only use premium ingredients, such as natural rock sugar for the teas, and New Zealand cheese for the cheese foam.

Also, their fruit teas are made from 100% natural fruit juices with no artificial flavourings or syrups added.

HEYTEA Westgate (3rd Branch in SG)

In November 2018, HEYTEA opened its first ever overseas outlet in Singapore at ION Orchard. This was followed by a second outlet at Clark Quay in February 2019.

On 07 September 2019, HEYTEA opened its third branch at Westgate mall. To celebrate its opening, the shop will be having a buy-one-get-one-free promotion from now till 09 September.

Being a kiasu Singaporean, I went down on the second opening day to enjoy this great promotion. I reached at 11.15am and there was already a long line of about 40 people.

However, the line moved quite fast and I got my drink after 30 minutes. I suspect most people came down because of the promotion, and the queue should be much shorter after 09 Sep.

Menu (Click to enlarge)

Cheezo Tea – HEYTEA’s signature drink is the cheese tea, known as Cheezo Tea. The menu offers four Cheezo Teas, with the recommended one being the King Fone Cheezo ($5.50).

Cheezo Fruit Teas – The Cheezo Fruit Teas are fruit smoothies topped with cheese foam. The flavours include Very Grape Cheezo ($9.50), Blueberry Duo Cheezo ($8.70), Mango Cheezo ($7.90), etc.

HEYTEA Ice Cream – During my visit I saw many kids enjoying the HEYTEA Ice Cream, which comes in flavours like Taro Blast Sundae ($4.80), Mango Sundae ($4.80) and Bobo Sundae ($4.50).

Singapore Exclusive – If you are adventurous, go for the two Singapore Exclusive items: Durian Crispy Cone ($4.80) and Salted Egg Yolk Crispy Cone ($4.80).

Oreo Flavours – Along with the opening of this new branch, HEYTEA will be introducing new Oreo-flavoured treats: Oreo Boboshake ($7.80) and Oreo Sundae ($4.50).

Others – The shop also serves pure fruit smoothies (“Fruity Boom”), Pure Tea, and Bobo Milk Tea.

It is possible to customise your drink’s sugar and ice levels. If you wish, you can opt out of the cheese foam.

Pleasant Ambience

The Westgate outlet is a bright and inviting space with plenty of seats and tables for customers. I saw many teenagers, families and children enjoying their bubble teas and ice creams in the shop.

King Fone Cheezo Tea (金凤茶王) – MUST TRY

I decided to order the King Fone Cheezo Tea ($5.50), which is oolong tea with a thick layer of cheese foam on top. This is the recommended drink for anyone trying HEYTEA the first time.

Interestingly, this cheese tea is drunk without a straw. Instead, I turned the lid open slightly to taste the cheese foam first.

The cheese had a very tasty umami flavour that was quite addictive. I had to control myself from eating too much of the cheese foam at once.

I must say I was pleasantly surprised by how good HEYTEA’s cheese foam tasted. I have tried other cheese teas in Singapore before and they were always rather disappointing.

Next, I followed the instructions on the lid and turned it open wider to drink the oolong tea. It was quite sweet with a very smooth texture. However, it tasted more like a pleasant sweet beverage rather than a fragrant tea.

Note: I ordered 50% sugar and the drink was still relatively sweet. If you do not have a sweet tooth you might want to go for 25% sugar instead.

Blueberry Duo Cheezo (芝芝蓝莓双拼)

The wife had the Blueberry Duo Cheezo ($8.70), which is a blueberry and strawberry smoothie topped with a layer of cheese foam.

I drank one mouthful and was happy to discover that this was made from real fruits and not some saccharine fruit syrup.

It had an extremely refreshing and natural taste, with rich blueberries and strawberries aromas.

The cheese foam added a savoury touch to the smoothie, and for some reason this combination actually tasted pretty good.

Cheese and fruit smoothie – who would have thought?

Brown Sugar Bobo

During my second visit, I tried the Brown Sugar Bobo ($4.50) because well, Brown Sugar drinks are all the rage now.

The drink had a layer of cream on top and was sweet, milky, and satisfying. However, it is significantly creamier than other Brown Sugar drinks in Singapore. If you are not a fan of cream you should not order this.

On the whole I enjoyed HEYTEA’s Brown Sugar Bobo but I think I still prefer Tiger Sugar.

Tispy Grape Beer

The Tispy Grape Beer ($8.70) is an alcoholic twist to the shop’s “Very Grape Cheezo” fruit tea. The tea base is made from green tea and Kyoho grapes, before being blended with Chang beer (wow).

This will be Westgate outlet’s only alcoholic drink. For more alcoholic options, you can check out the Clarke Quay outlet.

I never imagined it would be possible to mix tea with alcohol! I’m curious how this HEYTEA alcoholic bubble tea will taste – leave a comment below if you’ve tried it before.

Conclusion

After trying the HEYTEA Cheezo Tea at Westgate mall, my perception of cheese teas has definitely changed for the better. The savoury cheese foam was really tasty, and the tea base was quite delicious too. However, I wished it had a richer tea fragrance. That said, it was still quite a satisfying drink.
