12 Best Places To Eat At Mid Valley Southkey Mall (Johor Bahru) – A&W, Xing Fu Tang, Kyochon, & More!

I visited Mid Valley Southkey mall in Johor Bahru recently and was impressed to see that it has many awesome eateries. It is especially affordable for Singaporeans to eat here due to our strong exchange rate against the ringgit. This is my list of 12 great places to eat at Mid Valley Southkey mall. (Click here to see the entire food directory.)

1. Kyochon

Kyochon is a South Korean fried chicken restaurant chain. The wife and I have tried this famous KFC in Gangnam before, and were eager to see how the Mid Valley version would fare.

We ordered the Kyochon Mix Wings (RM 32), which consists of 12 pieces of Soy Garlic, Red Pepper, and Honey fried wings (4 of each flavour).

Our favourite was the Honey wings, which had sweet crunchy skin covering juicy white meat beneath. It was savoury but not overly greasy. The other two flavours were decent but not as satisfying.

Opening Hours: Daily 10am to 10pm

2. A&W

A&W is a famous American fast food restaurant chain. Currently, the A&W queue at Jewel Changi Airport is still really long, so if you have a major craving for root beer float, you can probably save time by going to the Mid Valley Southkey branch instead (seriously).

When I dropped by the outlet at 11.45am on a Sunday, there were only a few people queueing up at the counter. I guess only Singaporeans are crazy over this fast food joint.

Location: LG-045
Opening Hours: Daily 10am to 10pm

3. Dragon-i

Dragon-i is a well-known Chinese restaurant with many branches across Malaysia. Its signature items are Xiao Long Bao (soup dumplings) and La Mian (Chinese pulled noodles).

Other popular items include the Chilled Drunken Chicken, Crispy Caramelised Eel, Szechuan Chilled Spicy Chicken, Double Boiled Chicken Soup, Shanghainese Pork Belly, etc.

Think of it as the Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao of Malaysia.

Location: LG-056
Opening Hours: Daily 10am to 10pm

4. KOI (Opening Soon)

Singaporeans will be happy to know that there is a KOI bubble tea shop in Mid Valley Southkey. I was curious to see if it would taste the same as KOI in Singapore. However, the outlet was still not opened when we visited.

Location: G-059
Opening Hours: Daily 10am to 10pm

5. Xing Fu Tang (幸福堂)

Yes, there are two bubble tea joints in this list. Xing Fu Tang (幸福堂) is another famous Taiwanese bubble tea shop that is currently very popular in Singapore. It is known for its signature Brown Sugar Boba Milk drink.

The brown sugar pearls are made in-house, and stir-fried in a large wok. Therefore, the pearls are supposed have a very soft texture and a rich caramelised fragrance.

Location: F-044A
Opening Hours: Daily 10am to 10pm

6. Meng Meng Roasted Duck (阿明帝皇鴨)

Meng Meng Roasted Duck (阿明帝皇鴨) is a Johor Bahru restaurant famous for its traditional roast meat dishes.

The meats are roasted in-house using charcoal, giving it depth and an enticing smoky flavour.

First-timers can go for the BBQ Pork, Roast Pork, Roast Duck Mixed Platter (RM45) to try a bit of everything.

Location: LG-012
Opening Hours: Daily 10am to 10pm

7. Lavender

Lavender is a popular Malaysian bakery chain that sells a variety of breads, pastries, and cakes.

Whenever the wife and I go to Johor Bahru, we will always make a pit stop at this bakery to pack back our favourite chocolate chiffon cake (RM 10.50). This is because the prices here are over two times cheaper than Singapore.

Therefore, we were happy to see that Mid Valley Southkey has a Lavender branch too. There are plenty of other tantalising bakes in the store, so make sure you drop by this bakery before heading home.

Location: LG-031
Opening Hours: Daily 10am to 10pm

8. Kim Lian Kee

Kim Lian Kee is a Chinese restaurant famous for its “Kuala Lumpur style” Hokkien mee. The original stall is located at Petaling Street (Chinatown) in Kuala Lumpur.

Unlike Singapore’s Hokkien mee, the KL Hokkien mee noodles are thicker and braised in a fragrant dark sauce.

According to online reviews, the Mid Valley Southkey branch’s Hokkien mee (RM 15.90) is quite delicious but can’t really be compared to the original.

If you are having a craving for KL Hokkien mee, you can check it out here without travelling all the way to Kuala Lumpur, but don’t expect it to be on par with the one at Petaling Street.

Location: LG-004
Opening Hours: Daily 10am to 10pm

9. Din Tai Fung

Din Tai Fung is a famous Taiwanese restaurant chain that specialises in Xiao Long Bao (soup dumplings) and the Huaiyang cuisine. Note that the Mid Valley Southkey outlet is Muslim-friendly and does not serve pork.

Location: LG-005&006
Opening Hours: Daily 10am to 10pm

10. Chir Chir Fusion Chicken Factory

Chir Chir Fusion Chicken Factory is another famous Korean Fried Chicken joint that originated from Seoul, South Korea.

The wife and I enjoy indulging in KFC at Chir Chir Singapore once in a while, though we always feel really sinful afterwards.

Compared to the Singapore outlet, the prices at the Mid Valley branch are significantly cheaper. Signatures include Crispy Fried Tenders, Spicy BBQ Roasted Chicken and Garlic Roasted Chicken.

Location: LG-054
Opening Hours: Daily 10am to 10pm

11. Secret Recipe

Secret Recipe is a well-known Malaysian halal café chain that serves a variety of Asian and Western dishes like Tom Yum King, Chicken Cordon Bleu, Spaghetti Meatballs, etc. They are also famous for their delicious cakes.

Many Singaporeans like to visit this cafe in Malaysia because the prices are a lot cheaper than the Singapore branches.

12. Nando’s

Nando’s is a South African restaurant chain that specialises in peri-peri style chicken dishes. This is another eatery that is very popular with Singaporeans.
