Akiyoshi, Bangkok – ALL YOU CAN EAT Shabu Shabu and Sukiyaki Hotpot Buffet at Siam Square One

During our holiday in Bangkok, the wife and I stumbled upon Akiyoshi Japanese Restaurant at Siam Square One and decided to check it out. I’m really glad we did because we had a wonderful meal here.

Akiyoshi Japanese Restaurant

Akiyoshi is an authentic Japanese restaurant in Bangkok that offers sumptuous hotpot buffet.

It was founded in 1995 and currently has seven branches across Bangkok. Some of the more central locations include Siam Square One, Asiatique and Phra Khanong. We visited the Siam Square One outlet.

The basic Buffet (THB 494) course offers a choice of Shabu Shabu or Sukiyaki soup base. If you want to have both soup bases, it will cost slightly more at THB 553.

The meat choices are beef, beef bacon, pork, bacon, and chicken. Vegetables include enoki mushrooms, tofu, shitake, black fungus, eggs, miso soup, and more. For carbs, there are garlic rice, Japanese rice and udon. The buffet time limit is 90 minutes.

There is also a Deluxe Buffet (THB 995) option which offers “Superior Beef”, Kurobuta beef, seafood, and sushi on top of the basic Buffet items. The time limit is also 90 minutes.

If you are feeling rich, go for the Premium Buffet (THB 1299), which offers a sashimi platter and premium sushi rolls on top of the Deluxe Buffet items. For this course, the time limit is longer at 120 minutes.

The child prices are about half of the prices stated above.

Akiyoshi sells a variety of beverages but interestingly, the Siam Square One branch does not sell alcohol. According to a sticker on the menu, this is because it is located near a university. Perhaps this is due to the presence of student gangs in the area.

Pleasant Dining Atmosphere With Great Service

Weird pose

To be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I stepped into Akiyoshi. Both the wife and I had never heard of this restaurant before and I was hoping we would not regret our decision to eat here.

Fortunately, my worries were unfounded. The restaurant was cozy and casual with a beautiful Japanese style décor – breezy and minimalist with clean lines and a beige colour theme.

Service was really good too. The staff were all very attentive and I didn’t have any problems ordering more items during the buffet.

We visited Akiyoshi on a Saturday at around 5.30pm and the restaurant was quite empty. However, it started filling up with customers from about 6pm onwards.

Sumptuous Sukiyaki Hotpot Buffet!

We decided to order the basic Buffet with Sukiyaki soup base (THB 494).

The sukiyaki broth was full-bodied with a distinct sweet and salty taste. We added fresh vegetables like white cabbage, tofu and enoki mushrooms into the broth to further sweeten and enhance its flavour.

Once the soup base started boiling, we added the tantalising slices of meat inside. My favourite was the chicken meat, which was very tender and tasted great with the sukiyaki broth. The beef was also very tender and did not have any gamey odour at all. The rest of the meats were fresh and delicious too.

And of course, it is a must to eat the meats with raw eggs for a true sukiyaki experience. After beating one egg in a saucer with my chopsticks, I dipped the cooked meats inside.

As expected, the meats tasted really good with the egg! For some reason, the raw egg combined really well with the sweet-salty flavours of the sukiyaki, and also gave the meats a lovely smooth texture.

I used to be a little hesitant about using raw eggs as a dipping sauce, but after I tried it for the first time I have been hooked ever since.

I also enjoyed eating the garlic rice which went very well with the sukiyaki broth.

Conclusion

I’m happy to have discovered Akiyoshi Japanese Restaurant in Bangkok. The buffet was so satisfying that we stayed for the full 90 minutes. The food was delicious, ambience was pleasant, and service was great too. Compared to other Bangkok eateries, the price here is not super affordable, but for the quality of the restaurant it was worth it.
