25 Fantastic Things To Do In The Jungfrau Region of Switzerland

I had lots of fun during my holiday in the Jungfrau region of Switzerland! This gorgeous region is located in the Bernese Oberland, and is named after the famous mountain Jungfrau.

I experienced paragliding over Interlaken, went for a cruise on the scenic Lake Brienz, did the exciting First Cliff Walk, and hiked through beautiful Swiss landscapes.

The Junfrau region also offers of other activities such as skiing, mountain biking, mountain karting, sky diving and zip-lining.

In this article, I have a compiled a list of 25 awesome things to do in the Jungfrau region, categorised by the respective towns of Interlaken, Wengen, Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald and Mürren.

– Interlaken –

1. Cruise on Lake Brienz or Lake Thun

Lake Brienz and Lake Thun are two famous alpine lakes with beautiful turquoise waters. Interlaken, the bustling resort town, is located between these two lakes.

Taking a cruise on either of the lakes is a very popular tourist activity.

I took a cruise on Lake Brienz and enjoyed the experience very much! Along the way, I got to enjoy amazing views of the scenic lake and beautiful Swiss landscape.

I found booking the cruise to be slightly complicated at first, but I managed to figure it out eventually.

Our first class tickets cost CHF 26.50 each with the Swiss Half Fare Card. The original price was CHF 53.

The cruise is free if you have the Swiss Travel Pass.

Based on online reviews, Lake Brienz is supposed to be more scenic than Lake Thun. However, I am unable to comment on that because I didn’t take the Lake Thun cruise.

For more information, you can visit the BLS website.

2. Paragliding

Paragliding is another popular activity in the Jungfrau region.

I did tandem paragliding in Interlaken, which is a two-person paragliding activity where the passenger is strapped into a harness in front of a professional pilot.

It’s hard to describe my emotions as I glided through the air, paragliding above Interlaken against the backdrop of the majestic Swiss Alps.

Switzerland is a beautiful country to explore, but to see the gorgeous landscape from high up in the sky was simply an amazing experience.

I booked my paragliding adventure with “Paragliding Interlaken”, a well-established company with plenty of excellent reviews on TripAdvisor.

Other than Interlaken, you can also do paragliding in Lauterbrunnen, Wengen, and Grindelwald. Each location offers a different experience of the beautiful Swiss landscape.

3. Harder Kulm

The Harder Kulm is a well-known viewing point on top of its namesake mountain. It stands at an elevation of 1,322 metres, offering stunning views of Lake Thun, Lake Brienz, and the famous trio of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.

To get to Harder Kulm, you just need to take a ten-minute funicular from Interlaken. There is a beautiful restaurant and kids playground at the summit.

– Wengen –

4. Wengen-Männlichen Aerial Cableway

The Wengen-Männlichen Aerial Cableway is a famous six-minute cable car ride that brings you from Wengen to Männlichen (a mountain in the Swiss Alps).

From Männlichen, you will get to enjoy awesome views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. It is also a great vantage point for enjoying views of the beautiful alpine valley below.

The cable car runs for most of May to October. Check out the latest cable car schedule here.

5. Männlichen – Kleine Scheidegg Hike (Panorama Trail)

From Männlichen, you can go on a scenic hike to Kleine Scheidegg. This is also known as the Panorama Trail.

This is an easy hike suitable for families and beginner hikers. The path leads through beautiful meadows, which will be covered with colourful wildflowers in the summer.

The route is around 4.4km and should take about 1.5 hours to complete.

6. Männlichen Royal Walk

The Männlichen Royal Walk is a short one kilometre hike up to the Männlichen peak. It is a gentle uphill walk (100 metres elevation gain) that is suitable for families.

At the top, there is an observation deck which offers awesome views of the Alps.

You can consider doing this short hike before starting on your route to Kleine Scheidegg.

7. Sledging From Männlichen

If you are looking to do something more exciting, you can go on an exhilarating sledging adventure from Männlichen to Holenstein.

This is also known as tobogganing. For more details, you can visit the official Männlichen sledding website.

8. Summer Sledding from Männlichen

In summer, you can go on an equally fun sledding descent from Männlichen to Grindelwald.

You can visit this summer sledding company website for more details.

9. Jungfraujoch (Top of Europe)

The Jungfraujoch is arguably the most famous viewing point in Switzerland. It is located in a region between the peaks of Jungfrau of Mönch.

Jungfraujoch is also known as the Top of Europe because it is home to the highest train station in Europe, at a whooping elevation of 3,454 metres.

The viewing point offers breathtaking views of the gorgeous snow-capped mountains, and also overlooks the beautiful Aletsch Glacier.

Other attractions include the Sphinx Observatory, Ice Palace, various multimedia shows, a Lindt chocolate shop, and multiple restaurants. Click here for more details.

10. Ski & Do

Ski & Do is a popular ski school in Wengen that offers lessons for both beginners and advanced skiers. It has plenty of excellent reviews on TripAdvisor.

– Lauterbrunnen –

11. Stabbauch Falls

Staubbach Falls is the most famous waterfall in Lauterbrunnen. It is a short 12-minute walk from the train station.

This gorgeous waterfall cascades downwards from a high altitude of 300 metres. I stood near the bottom of Staubbach Falls for about 15 minutes to revel in its beauty.

The waterfall cascaded from such a high point that it was almost lost in spray by the time it reached the bottom.

It is possible to go up a steep trail to a viewing area behind the falls. Unfortunately, when we visited in April, this trail was closed to visitors.

It only opens between May and October. You can click here to see the most updated opening dates.

12. Trümmelbach Falls

The Trümmelbach Falls (German: Trümmelbachfälle) is a series of 10 glacier waterfalls hidden inside a mountain. It is a UNESCO World heritage site.

To get to the falls, visitors need to take a tunnel lift inside the mountain and then walk along slippery rock paths.

Visitors are treated to deafening roars of the majestic waterfalls. You will also get to see impressive rock formations created by the raging waters.

To get to the Trümmelbach Falls, you can either hike for 3.6 kilometres (passing by Staubbach Falls along the way) or take a 10-minute bus ride from Lauterbrunnen.

13. Lauterbrunnen – Stechelberg Hike

The Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg trail is a very popular hike in the Jungfrau region.

This flat and wide trail offers great views of the dramatic rock walls, along with a beautiful view of the prominent Breithorn.

You will pass by many pretty waterfalls, with the first one being the Staubbach Falls located near the start of the hike. You will also pass by the Trümmelbach Falls later along the way.

As it was getting dark by the time I reached Lauterbrunnen, I didn’t do this hike. We only walked for a short distance along the trail towards the Staubbach Falls.

14. Mountain Biking

Mountain biking is a great way to explore the beautiful valley of Lauterbrunnen.

You can rent your bikes from Imboden Bike, a popular bike rental company. If you do not like physical activity, there are electric bikes available too.

According to online reviews, the staff are very helpful and will show you suggested routes based on your preferences.

15. Visit Isenfluh & Sulwald

Isenfluh

Cable car to Sulwald

Isenfluh is a sunny mountain village located around 400 metres above Lauterbrunnen.

This is a serene village off the beaten tourist path. You will also get to enjoy fantastic views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau peaks.

To get to Isenfluh, you can take the PostBus from Lauterbrunnen. The bus ride will take about 12 minutes.

For the thrill seekers, Isenfluh offers plenty of fun outdoor activities like scooter-riding, hiking, ice climbing and sledging.

From Isenfluh, you can take a five-minute cable car ride up to Sulwald, a hamlet that offers amazing views of the three famous peaks.

– Grindelwald –

16. First Cliff Walk By Tissot

First Cliff Walk is a bridge walk along “First”, a famous summit in the Jungfrau region.

To get here, you simply need to take a 25-minute cable car ride from Firstbahn Cable Car Station in Grindelwald. Click here for more details.

The cliff walk stands at an elevation of around 2100 metres, and culminates in a heart-stopping viewing deck that extends 45 metres out over the precipice.

I had a wonderful morning here! It was super cool to walk on this harrowing bridge that skirted the vertical cliff face.

And of course, standing at the edge of the viewing platform over the deep valleys of the Swiss Alps was a surreal experience. I highly recommend this fun activity.

17. First Activities

Other than the First Cliff Walk, there are four other popular activities on First. These are the First Flyer, First Glider, Mountain Cart, and Trottibike Scooter.

The First Flyer is a zip line that carries riders downhill to Shreckfeld cable car station. I started yelling my lungs out once the gate opened and I was whooshing through the air. I enjoyed this exhilarating activity very much!

The First Glider is a round-trip zip line. The station is located near Schreckfeld cable car station. The glider whooshes you up to First, before bringing you back down to Schreckfeld again. We did not do this activity because we felt it was similar to the zip line.

The Mountain Cart is a fun activity where you get to ride a manual go-cart downhill from Shreckfeld down to Bort.

The Trottibike Scooter is another fun activity where you ride a trottibike (a cross between a bicycle and a standing scooter) downhill from Bort to Grindelwald.

For more details, you can visit the official First website and check out this useful Grindelwald-First brochure.

18. First – Bachsee – First Hike

The First – Bachsee – First trail is an easy and popular 5.8km hike that should take around 2.5 hours to complete.

The path starts from First, goes on to Bachsee, before returning back to First. Bachsee is a small and beautiful alpine lake located at the base of the Faulhorn.

Unfortunately, the trail was closed when I visited in April.

19. Eiger Trail

The Eiger Trail is a moderately difficult hike that starts from Eigergletscher station and ends at the foot of the majestic Eiger north face.

Along the way, you will enjoy amazing views of the Grindelwald valley, Lauberhorn, and Kleine Scheidegg.

For more details, visit the official Eiger Trail website.

– Mürren –

20. Schilthorn

The Schilthorn is a famous mountain summit in the Jungfrau region.

To get to the summit, you will need to take a 35 minute cable car ride which offers great views of the Alps.

Upon reaching the top, you will be rewarded with stunning panoramic views of the famous Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau.

Other than the views, the main attraction here is the revolving restaurant Piz Gloria. This famous restaurant was featured prominently in the 1969 James Bond film, “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”.

There is even a James Bond museum here.

21. Thrill Walk, Birg

The Thrill Walk in Birg is an exciting walk along a steel and glass bridge that skirts a vertical rock wall. Walking along the bridge, you will reach an observation platform that offers awesome views. There is a restaurant here too.

Most tourists will visit this attraction on their way up or down from the Schilthorn.

22. Grütschalp – Mürren Hike

Hiking from Grütschalp to Mürren is quite easy. This 4.3 kilometres hike should take around just 1.5 hours to complete.

This path leads through forests and lush grass plains, offering awesome views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, and the Lauterbrunnen valley.

For more details, click here.

23. Allmendhubel Funicular

The Allmendhubel is Mürren’s home mountain, with an impressive height of 1,907 metres. You can reach the summit by taking a short 3-minute funicular ride.

The main highlight at the summit are the breathtaking views of the Swiss Alps. There is also a large playground and a traditional Swiss restaurant.

There are lots of hiking trails to choose from here. You can also hike back down to Mürren.

24. Mürren – Gimmelwald Via Ferrata

The Via Ferrata in Murren is a protected climbing route with a steel cable attached to the rock at short intervals throughout the path.

Climbers use carabiners to attach themselves to the cable and proceed through the route.

You will climb along the side of the mountain, go through two nerve-wrecking cable wire crossings, and walk across a swaying narrow suspension bridge.

The route starts from Sportchalet Mürren and ends at Gimmelwald. It will take about three to four hours to complete.

This is definitely not an activity for the faint-hearted. It also requires a certain level of fitness. If you have no experience in mountain climbing, I strongly recommend that you hire a guide.

Equipment can be rented from Intersport Stager Sport in Mürren.

25. Skiing

The Jungfrau Region is known to be a skiing heaven. It offers around 206 kilometres of pistes, with a wide range of difficulty levels ranging from beginner to expert.

Popular areas to ski include the Schiltorn, Grindelwald-First, Männlichen, and Kleine Scheidegg.

    Hi Evan & Raevian,

I’m so impressed with your travel itinerary and those useful pieces of information! It really gives me some idea of where to go and experience during my trip in May.

Wondering which month you travelled to Switzerland? Would there still be snow at the end of May (both city and mountain)? How’s the weather?

Thank you for your attention! I’m keen for your reply.

    Hi Chloe!

Thank you for your kind words and I’m happy you found the information useful.

We went to Switzerland in mid April. No, there will definitely not be snow at the end of May in the city. When we visited in April there was already no snow at all.

As for the mountains, it depends. There will not be snow at the First Cliff Walk, but Jungfraujoch will be covered in snow the whole year round.

The weather in Interlaken will be pleasant, ranging between 10 to 20 degree Celcius, but it will be colder up in the mountains.

Hope this helps and let me know if you have more questions!

    Cheers,
    Evan
