Heng Hua Boon Lay Boneless Duck Noodles – Delicious Noodles at Boon Lay Place Food Village With Daily Long Queues

There is one reason why I really like visiting Heng Hua Boon Lay Boneless Duck Noodles (興發文礼起骨鸭面) at Boon Lay Place Food Village. Other than the super delicious duck noodles, it’s because the stall doesn’t boast the usual “culinary awards”, celebrity photos, and other random accolades. I’m not saying it’s not good to have accolades, but the fact that the stall owners don’t really care all about these, suggests they would rather focus their energy on just one task: producing good food.

Heng Hua Boon Lay Boneless Duck Noodles (興發文礼起骨鸭面) is a well-known hawker stall at Boon Lay Place Food Village that sells braised duck noodles.

Every time I visit the stall, there will always be a queue of at least 5 or 6 people. During peak hours, there can be almost 20 people in the queue.

The old-school stall opens early at 6am for the breakfast crowd. It will usually close before the stated closing time of 10am, once the duck noodles are sold out. It reopens again at 5pm for dinner, and closes at around 7pm (or earlier if they sell out).

As mentioned, Heng Hua does not really engage in much marketing, and it got popular purely by word of mouth. This is testimony to how delicious their duck noodles are.

And you can be rest assured that unlike some other famous food stalls, you will not be subjected to tirades by the staff if you make a mistake or take too long while ordering. It’s good to see that they respect their customers.

Menu



The stall sells just one item: Duck Noodles. You can choose your type of noodles, such as yellow noodles or vermicelli.

The duck noodles have both dry and soup versions. I have tried both before and I definitely prefer the dry version.

If you order the dry noodles, it comes with a bowl of herbal-flavoured soup. Note that there is no soup for takeaways.

A regular bowl costs $3.50, while the larger bowl goes for $4.50. If you order duck drumstick noodles, it will cost $5. This is my favourite option even though it’s the most expensive.

You can also choose to add a variety of savoury toppings such as duck wings, duck gizzards, duck livers, duck eggs, and roasted pork.

I add roasted pork quite often. Even though it is not as delicious as the signature duck meat, it still serves as a very nice complement to the dish.

When I’m feeling (really) sinful, I will add duck gizzards, and try my best to forget about how much cholesterol it has.

Note that the duck noodles come with plenty of bean sprouts by default. If you are not a fan of this vegetable, remember to request for no bean sprouts, or you will find a copious amount of bean sprouts covering your noodles and meat.

Duck Drumstick Noodles (Dry)


I usually order the dry Duck Drumstick Noodles ($5) with yellow noodles. It comes with a bowl of hot herbal-flavoured soup.

This dish never fails to satisfy me!

I love the duck meat which is really juicy and tender. It has a lovely savoury flavour with a subtle herbal scent. Unlike other duck meats, it does not have any gamey taste at all.

It is complemented by the savoury gravy which has a smooth and luscious texture, but is not overly starchy.

The duck meat, gravy and noodles come together perfectly to form a super delicious bowl of duck noodles.

And of course, it is a must to add some of the stall’s feisty chili sauce to the dish. I will usually add a generous amount and stir it in with the noodles. This adds an extra dimension to the dish and I simply love the resulting savoury-spicy flavour!

The soup is a treat too. It is always served hot, and has a pleasant herbal flavour that is fragrant but not overwhelming. It always feels good to wash down all the duck noodles goodness with this hot bowl of soup.

Conclusion


Heng Hua Boon Lay Boneless Duck Noodles is one of my favourite hawker stalls in Singapore. In a food scene dominated by sponsored media tastings and food fads, it’s comforting to know that I can still enjoy a bowl of scrumptious duck noodles at a hawker stall that has stuck to its roots.
