Nyonya Chendol – Super Satisfying and Delicious $1.50 Chendol With Six Hawker Outlets Islandwide!

Recently, I chanced upon Nyonya Chendol, a hawker stall that specialises in chendol. The stall is currently very popular and has rapidly expanded across Singapore. I was really impressed by how delicious their chendol tastes! Update 10 January 2020: the Boon Lay outlet has closed down, but there are still five other branches across Singapore. See list at end of article.

Nyonya Chendol

Nyonya Chendol is a chendol specialist hawker stall that has expanded rapidly in the past few years. It currently has six branches across Singapore. I visited the Boon Lay Place Food Village stall.

For the unfamiliar, “chendol” is a sweet shaved-ice dessert comprising pandan jelly, coconut milk, and gula melaka (palm sugar syrup).

Nyonya Chendol Menu

Nyonya Chendol offers five types of chendol: Original Chendol ($1.50), Red Bean Chendol ($2), Sweet Corn Chendol ($2), Chempedak Chendol ($3), and XO Durian Chendol ($3.50).

Red Bean Chendol

It was quite interesting to see how the Red Bean Chendol ($2) is prepared.

The hawker lady used the ice machine to produce shaved ice, then deftly doused it with creamy coconut milk and golden-brown gula melaka, before adding pandan jelly strips and red beans.

The shaved ice had a very smooth and consistent texture. And I simply love the wonderfully sweet flavours of the glossy gula melaka and rich coconut milk.

The luscious red beans were the highlight – cooked perfectly with great bite, complementing the chendol perfectly with its distinct flavour.

The velvety pandan jelly worms completed the experience with their aromatic fragrance and delicious taste.

Sweet Corn Chendol

If you are not a fan of red bean, go for the Sweet Corn Chendol ($2). It is prepared exactly the same way, but is added with sweet corn instead of red beans. The mushy sweet corns have great bite and add an extra dimension to the chendol.

XO Durian Chendol

To be honest, my expectations were pretty low when I ordered the XO Durian Chendol ($3.50). I mean, chendol with durian? But boy, was I in for a treat.

For some strange reason, the luscious chunk of aromatic durian puree complemented the icy chendol perfectly. The sweet and fragrant puree blended wonderfully with the chendol, and had a fantastic texture that felt so good in my mouth.

On the downside, durian is super “heaty” so make sure you drink plenty of water afterwards. I had to down three glasses of water afterwards because I could really feel the heaty effects of this potent tropical fruit.

Chempedak Chendol

The Chempedak Chendol ($3) was interesting, but not as delicious as the Durian Chendol. I enjoyed eating the chunks of Chempedak, a juicy orange-fleshed fruit similar to Jackfruit, but it was not really super satisfying. Only order this if you are a fan of Jackfruit.

Conclusion

The chendol sold by Nyonya Chendol in Boon Lay Hawker Centre is seriously super satisfying. And this cold icy dessert is especially perfect for Singapore’s scorching weather. It is very affordable, with the plain chendol going for just $1.50 (though the portion is quite small). At the end of the day, I don’t really care much for all the controversy surrounding this dessert. All I want to do is enjoy my delicious bowl of chendol drizzled with sweet gula melaka and coconut milk.
