Lan Fong Yuen Milk Tea from Hong Kong Arrives In Singapore – We Tried The Drink And This Is Our Verdict!

The famous Lan Fong Yuen milk tea from Hong Kong is now being sold at all NTUC and 7-Eleven outlets in Singapore! Like 99% of Singaporeans, the wife and I love drinking milk tea, so we were really excited to check out this drink.

Lan Fong Yuen (蘭芳園)

Lan Fong Yuen (蘭芳園) is a famous cha chaan teng (tea cafe) in Hong Kong known for its delicious “pantyhose milk tea”.

The milk tea has this interesting (and slightly weird) name because the cloth bag used to filter the tea leaves resembles a silk stocking.

We tried this famous milk tea in Hong Kong and it was really the perfect tea blend! It had an aromatic tea flavour which stood up perfectly to the sweet creamy evaporated milk.

Our Verdict of the Off-The-Shelf Version

We managed to buy the off-the-shelf version of Lan Fong Yuen Milk Tea at a 7-Eleven outlet in Tanjong Pagar.

I took one sip, and to be honest, I was rather ambivalent about the taste.

As far as off-the-shelf milk tea goes, this was definitely not bad. It tasted pretty decent with a sweet and milky flavour.

However, it was definitely not on par with the original version we tried in Hong Kong.

The sweet flavour of the milk tea was a bit artificial, and the texture was too thin for my liking. And I couldn’t really detect any tea scent.

Upon taking a closer look at the packaging, I realised that the drink is produced in China. Which is a little strange considering that Lan Fong Yuen originates from Hong Kong.

Well, at least it has a long expiry period. According to its label, the milk tea can be kept in the fridge for nine months (though I wouldn’t risk storing a dairy product for that long).

In conclusion, I wasn’t blown away by this ready-to-go Lan Fong Yuen milk tea. Well, perhaps my expectations were too high. And at the end of the day, it’s not really fair to compare a packaged drink to freshly brewed milk tea anyways.

Lan Fong Yuen milk tea retails for S$2.80 at all 7-Eleven and NTUC outlets in Singapore.
