Bok’s Kitchen by Hidden Chefs – Fusion Rice Bowls And Comfort Food, Now With Delivery In The West

It’s not that often that you find a cafe within a HDB estate, so I was surprised to chance upon Bok’s Kitchen by Hidden Chefs in a quiet heartland neighbourhood.

Bok’s Kitchen by Hidden Chefs

Bok’s Kitchen by Hidden Chefs is a new cafe located in Boon Lay, a peaceful neighbourhood in the far west of Singapore. It offers sumptuous fusion rice bowls at very affordable prices. Other than rice bowls, it also serves a variety of other comfort food.

Menu (Click to Enlarge)

The cafe specialises in fusion rice bowls like Char Siew Rice Bowl ($9), Grilled Chicken Rice Bowl ($11.90), and Salmon Teriyaki Rice Bowl ($14.90). For first timers, I highly recommend the char siew rice bowl and grilled chicken rice bowl.

The menu also offers a wide variety of other comfort food like pasta, burgers, fish & chips, brunch, and side items.

Some of our favourites include the sumptuous Bok’s Breakfast ($14), Pork Loin Aglio Olio ($11), Deep Fried Garlic Winglets ($7), and Seabass Linguine ($14.90).

For drinks, they serve coffee, tea, and sweet beverages. They also sell several types of beers at really good prices!

Casual Atmosphere and Good Service

Bok’s Kitchen is a simple industrial-themed space. The glass front allows for plenty of natural daylight to flood the cafe, accentuating the clean grey walls and industrial fittings.

We like eating at Bok’s Kitchen because the casual atmosphere sets diners at ease, making it a great place to enjoy a meal with family and friends.

Service is great too – the staff are always very polite and our orders always arrive quickly.

Char Siew Rice Bowl (MUST TRY)

Our favourite dish at Bok’s Kitchen is the simple but delicious Char Siew Rice Bowl ($9).

This tantalizing dish consists of char siew (barbecued pork) served on Italian spiced rice and topped with an onsen egg and sliced pickles.

The dish’s modest presentation belied how delicious it tasted. The char siew was succulent with great texture, and had an enticing smoky flavour.

The rice was a highlight too, with a distinct earthy / musky fragrance which I enjoyed very much. The luscious egg and tangy sliced pickles helped to accentuate the overall flavour.

This was one satisfying dish, and it costs just $9!

Grilled Chicken Rice Bowl (MUST TRY)

The Grilled Chicken Rice Bowl ($11.90) is another one of our favourites. The dish comprises marinated chicken thigh served on Italian spiced rice, and topped with an onsen egg and sliced pickles.

The chicken had a great savoury flavour and a smooth texture, along with just the right amount of bite.

Together with the delicious onsen egg and sliced pickles, this was one satisfying dish too.

Salmon Teriyaki Rice Bowl

On days when I feel like eating healthy, I will order the Salmon Teriyaki Rice Bowl ($14.90). This sumptuous rice bowl consists of salmon glazed lightly with teriyaki sauce and served on Italian spiced rice.

It is paired with an onsen egg and generous toppings of corn, edamame and sliced pickles. The salmon teriyaki was the highlight. It had a tasty savoury flavour and was really tender and juicy.

The corn, edamame, and sliced pickles provided a nice balance with their refreshing flavours. The delicious spiced rice and onsen egg completed the experience.

Pork Loin Aglio Olio

Other than Bok’s Kitchen’s rice bowls, we also like the Pork Loin Aglio Olio ($11). The spaghetti is cooked aglio olio style with garlic, olive oil and chilli, and is served with a tantalising chunk of pork loin.

Since Bok’s Kitchen’s specialty is in rice bowls, we did not have high expectations for this dish. However, we were pleasantly surprised by how good it tasted.

We really enjoyed the savoury spaghetti which was cooked al dente. The pork loin was juicy and sweet, and went surprisingly well with the pasta.

This is a good dish if you want to try something unique.

Deep Fried Garlic Winglets

The Deep Fried Garlic Winglets ($7) is our secret guilty pleasure in Bok’s Kitchen. These mini winglets are fried thai-style with plenty of garlic and basil.

We loved the savoury crispy skin, which wraps the super juicy and tender meat beneath. Before we knew it, we had finished the entire bucket.

Spinach Mushroom Aglio Olio

I visited Bok’s Kitchen again recently and ordered their new item, the Spinach Mushroom Aglio Olio ($10). This unassuming presentation of this dish belied its delicious taste!

The aglio olio was perfectly al dente with a nice smooth texture. I loved its delicious savoury flavour and was hooked from the first bite.

The sautéed spinach and mushrooms complimented the pasta perfectly. On the whole, this was one super satisfying dish.

Seabass Linguine

On another occasion, I tried the rather nondescript sounding Seabass Linguine ($14.90). I was expecting a simple aglio olio pasta topped with a slab of seabass, but boy, was I in for a pleasant surprise!

When the dish was served, I could smell the aroma of fragrant assam sauce emanating from the linguine. It was topped with onion rings and coriander, along with a chunk of golden-brown seabass.

I loved the assam sauce! It had a wonderful combination of tangy, savoury, spicy and sweet flavours that came together perfectly. Together with the al dente linguine, this was one satisfying pasta dish.

The seabass was extremely well cooked too. I put a small chunk in my mouth, and enjoyed how the crisp golden brown skin gave way to the tender white fish meat.

If you are looking to try something different, I strongly recommend this unique fusion dish.

Conclusion

With its delicious food, good service, and affordable prices, Bok’s Kitchen is definitely worth checking out if you happen to be in the west part of Singapore. Your trip to the far west will be rewarded with sumptuous and Instagram-worthy rice bowls.
