Choosing the Laminates for our House

Choosing the correct laminates is very important because they can greatly affect the overall look of your house. I highly recommend that you visit the showrooms to see the full selection of laminates, instead of simply relying on samples given by your ID. We visited the beautiful showrooms of EDL Laminate and Lamitak, which were very impressive and provided us with much inspiration as well. We went through dozens of samples before finally making our decisions. Below are the laminates we picked for the various sections of our house. This article was last updated on 31 January 2020.

TV Console

For our TV console, we wanted a simple white look. At first, we thought that we just had to choose a “simple” white laminate. But we quickly realized that the white laminates had many different types of shades, textures and finishes! We looked through almost a dozen white laminate samples before finally deciding on the Porcelain (DSK 5700SM) laminate from EDL Laminate. We selected this particular laminate because it has a classy-looking matt texture. It is also relatively scratch resistant.

DB Box Door

Since the overall color scheme of our living room is white, we decided to go with the Porcelain (DSK 5700SM) laminate from EDL Laminate for our DB Box door as well.

DB Box Recessed Shelf

For our DB Box recessed shelf, we wanted it to have a color that would stand out, so we went with the Dark Silver Brush (EMM 2723) from EDL Laminate. We really like the shiny and glossy texture of this laminate, which gives it a luxurious and classy feel. We also like the shiny look of the laminate when we switch on our 3000K LED strip lights.

Kitchen Island and Cabinet

We picked the Porcelain (DSK 5700SM) from EDL Laminate again for all our kitchen carpentry because the colour scheme of our kitchen is white. In addition, since the kitchen is a relatively high traffic area, we wanted a laminate that would be quite scratch-resistant. We are very happy with how our kitchen turned out with this simple white laminate.

Wardrobe

For our wardrobe doors, we chose the Grigio Londra (Fenix LS 0880FX) from EDL Laminate. This is definitely our favourite laminate! It has an awesome color tone and texture, which give it a really classy look.

This laminate is from the well-known Fenix series. Fenix is a high-quality laminate that utilizes nanotechnology in its manufacturing process (like Iron man’s suit inside Infinity War).

It is anti-fingerprint, highly resistant to scratches and heat, waterproof, and mould-proof. The laminate even has a “self-healing” property!

We were quite skeptical at first when told about this property. However, after we scratched the laminate hard with a key, we were amazed to see that the scratch mark actually disappeared after a short while.

It is also possible to use Fenix as a kitchen counter-top. This is because it is an extremely durable material that can withstand heat and abrasion.

This premium laminate comes with a premium price, but we still decided to use it for our wardrobe doors because of its gorgeous aesthetics and exceptional properties.

For the gap in between our doors, we picked the Truffle (SCX 1165D) laminate from Lamitak. It provided a nice dark contrast with the wardrobe doors.

MBR Toilet Cabinet

Our Master Bedroom (MBR) toilet is luxe-themed, therefore we used the Truffle (SCX 1165D) from Lamitak for our cabinet. It has a dark color with a classy-looking matt texture, which makes it ideal for our MBR toilet.

Common Toilet Cabinet

Last but not least, for our common toilet cabinet we picked the Black Nickel (SCA 5107D) laminate from Lamitak. The dark grey color of the matt laminate complements our white-themed toilet nicely.

Update 31 January 2020

After using the laminates for around two years, I’m happy to report that they are still in very good conditions.

The white laminate for our TV console, DB box door, and kitchen carpentry is holding up very well and do not have any visible scratches despite being used frequently. There is no discolouration at all and the laminates still look very new.

The silver laminate for our DB box recessed shelf do not have any scratches too, which is very impressive considering that we usually throw our keys there.

The Truffle and Black Nickel laminate for both our bathroom cabinets are holding up well too, but they get water stains easily. However, the water stains will usually evaporate after about 30 minutes. Therefore, our bathroom cabinets still look very clean and smooth after two years.

I am most impressed with the Fenix laminate used for our wardrobe doors! It still looks brand new after two years and there are no scratches at all. It is definitely worth the premium we paid.
