Summer Hardware Trading – Awesome Sanitary Ware Shop at Jalan Besar Singapore!

After visiting many shops along Jalan Besar, we decided to buy our kitchen and bathroom sanitary fittings from Summer Hardware Trading. This is because we were very impressed by the great service and reasonable prices here. This article was last updated on 07 February 2020 with the current condition of my bathroom fittings, see bottom of this article.

What is Summer Hardware Trading?

Summer Hardware Trading sells a variety of bathroom and kitchen fittings such as taps, mixers, shower heads, basins, toilet bowls, heater, etc. It is located at 255 Jalan Besar. It mainly carries items by the local sanitary brand OttO. This store space was previously occupied by Hupfarri Bathroom and Kitchen Gallery.

Impressive Showroom

Compared to the other shops in Jalan Besar, we felt that Summer Hardware had a better store interior design. The products were presented neatly with ample space, instead of being crammed together like in other shops. This made it a lot easier for us to browse through the myriad of products. The showroom was also quite spacious which made it easy for us to walk around.

Wonderful Service and Reasonable Prices

However, we were most impressed by the great service here. We were served by Ling, a friendly lady who was very helpful and knowledgeable. She answered all our questions patiently, and was not pushy at all. Even after we told her that we wanted to leave the shop and think about it first, her friendly attitude did not change. This was in stark contrast to the indifferent or rude staff we had encountered in other shops.

In addition, we found that Summer Hardware had one of the best prices compared with other shops in Jalan Besar. Therefore, we decided to return to the shop to make our purchases.

“Joven JH 25” Storage Water Heater

The Joven heater in our service yard

One of the items we bought was the Joven JH 25 ($275) storage heater. We chose the Joven brand because according to various online reviews and forums, it is one of the more reliable brands for water heaters.

Instant vs Storage Water Heater
We decided to get a storage heater because it is able to produce enough water pressure for our rainshower. If we had gotten an instant electric heater, the water pressure would be too low, since it is a pressure-reducing system. You can read more about instant vs storage water heaters here.

Storage Heater Size
Our rainshower has a 200mm width, meaning that it has a flow rate of 12 litres per minute. Currently, only Raevian and I are staying in our house. After reading this article on water heater size, we decided that a 25 litre storage heater would be sufficient for our bathing needs.

“Baron WC 888” Toilet Bowl

Our MBR toilet

For our toilet bowl, we went with the Baron WC 888 ($380), which is probably the most popular toilet bowl on the renovation forum Renotalk.com. This is because it has an elegant one-piece design where the cistern is connected to the toilet bowl. The price is very affordable too. It is fitted with the Geberit flushing mechanism, which is supposed to be a very reliable and powerful flushing system.

S-Trap vs P-Trap
An S-trap is where the waste outlet is on the floor, while a P-trap is where the waste outlet is on the rear wall. Both our common and MBR toilets had S-traps, so we needed to get a S-Trap toilet bowl. We also measured the distance between the rear wall and the centre of the waste outlet – this is to ensure that the toilet bowl dimensions can match our waste outlet dimensions.

“Otto 343-03” Kitchen Sink Tap

Our kitchen top

After browsing through the myriad of sink taps, we decided to buy the Otto 343-03 ($144) tap for our kitchen sink because of its pretty sleek design.

Conclusion

We are glad that we discovered Summer Hardware Trading among all the sanitary ware shops in Jalan Besar. We had the best shopping experience here! Ling was a great staff who provided wonderful service. In addition, the prices were also extremely reasonable. We highly recommend this shop for new homeowners in Singapore. (There is also another showroom in Toa Payoh, but we did not visit that branch)

Update 07 February 2020

After using the Summer Hardware Trading fittings for over two years, they are still in great working conditions.

The Joven storage water heater is still working perfectly. It usually takes 5 minutes or less to heat up enough water for about 10 minutes of bathing.

The Otto 343-03 kitchen sink tap is still working great too, though it tends to get water stains quite easily.

Finally, our Baron WC 888 toilet bowl still functions great, but the toilet seat is quite loose and comes down on its own easily. However, I’m not sure if this is because our contractors did not install it properly.

In addition, the underside of the toilet seat now has a permanent stain, even though we clean it quite regularly. Perhaps it’s because the material stains easily. The rest of the toilet bowl is still very clean.

    Hey Mr Law,

Yes it’s working perfectly! I’m very happy with both the build quality and the flushing mechanism. I’ve had no problems with it from day 1.

I’m currently checking for kitchen (hob, hood, and sink) and bathroom (almost everything) accessories for the resale flat I just bought. Need really value-for-money options. Wondering if you think Summer Hardware Trading is recommended?

Hi Chloe, yes as mentioned in the article above I experienced very good service and affordable prices at Summer Hardware. I don’t think they sell hob and hood though; you can check out Harvey Norman Millenia Walk instead. They have an amazing variety of products, and they practice price-matching which means we got the lowest possible price we could find here.

    hi LeZua,

It was provided by my ID. It is quite a common feature that most IDs / contractors should be able to provide =)

    Dear Evan,

Checking with you , how is your shower screen enclosure? Are you happy with them? The fixed shower panel, Does it shake and bouncy when u close the swing door ? Because I don’t see any top bar to hold the fixed frameless glass panel and I wonder if it’s firmly stand alone. Please kindly advise and I’m very much looking forward in ur reply.. Thank you..

    BestRegards,
    JZ

    Dear Jazzie,

The fixed shower panel only shakes a little when I close the swing door, but it’s not very noticeable and definitely not a problem. Even when I close the swing door harder sometimes accidentally, the fixed panel shakes more but the structure still remains very much intact. Overall the shower screen enclosure is still in great working condition after around 5 years.

Hope this helps and good luck with your renovation!
