8 Best Stalls in Shenton House! (Downtown MRT Station)

Shenton House is a commercial building located along Shenton Way. There are plenty of good food to eat on its first two levels! It is a five-minute walk from the Downtown MRT station. I enjoy coming here for lunch because the second level is air-conditioned and so I can eat in comfort, away from the scorching afternoon heat. The first level stalls are pretty well-sheltered so it’s quite cooling too. After checking out all the stalls in Shenton House, I have compiled a list of my eight favourite stalls below, arranged in alphabetical order. Note that all the stalls close by about 4pm.

1. Hello Food Fish Soup (first floor)

When I am feeling hungry and craving for fish soup, I will make my way to the Fish Soup stall on the first floor of Shenton House. This is because the portion served is simply HUGE! The bowl feels big enough to wash my face and nourish it with luscious fish soup.

Inside the soup, there is a generous amount of fish slices which always taste super succulent and tender. The tomato in the soup provides a nice piquant flavour, enhancing the overall taste. On the whole, this is a hearty bowl of fish soup with generous servings of succulent fish slices and a very well-balanced flavour. However, it is relatively expensive as the owners have recently raised the price of the signature fish soup to $8.

2. Jaggi’s Northern Indian Cuisine

Jaggi’s Northern Indian Cuisine is an Indian food restaurant that specializes in authentic north Indian cuisine. Through word of mouth, it has become extremely popular among local and expat Indians working in the CBD. However, there are also many non-Indians who often patronize the restaurant to enjoy the delicious and flavourful Indian food.

I ordered the Chicken Dum Biryani ($6.40) – rather pricey but it was definitely worth my money. The grainy biriyani rice was cooked to perfection with just the right amount of bite and had an alluring aromatic flavour. But I enjoyed the chicken the most! It was tender and savoury with a pleasantly smooth texture. I dipped it in the curry sauce and it tasted wonderful. Even though the price is slightly pricey, I will definitely come back often to indulge in the delicious north Indian food!

3. Mouthful Cafe Fish Soup (second floor)

I enjoy eating the Fish Soup on the second floor because it is very rich in flavour. The fish slices are tender and smooth, and goes perfectly with the delicious chili sauce. I always coat the fish slices with hearty amounts of chili sauce before savouring the wonderful combination in my mouth. I also recommend checking out the Tom Yam flavour fish soup – it is savoury, tangy, gutsy and fragrant!

4. Olive’s

Olive’s is a Western food bistro that serves delicious comfort food. For the Western food menu, you get to choose 1 Main (Chicken Chop, Roast Chicken, Chicken Cutlet, Fish Cutlet, Baked Fish), 2 Sides (Butter Rice, Wedges, Mashed Potato, Coleslaw, etc) and 1 Sauce (Brown Sauce, Garlic Cream, Hot Salsa, Spicy Asian).

I will usually go with Chicken Chop, Mashed Potato, Coleslaw, and the Spicy Asian sauce. While the food may not have the presentation flair of a high class restaurant, it is definitely decent comfort food that always satisfy my palate. I will usually visit Olive’s on days when I want to de-stress from work through indulging in sinful comfort food.

5. Teck Ee Economy Rice (first floor)

One of the most popular stalls in Shenton House is the Teck Ee Economy Rice stall on the first level, which offers delicious Economy Rice (aka Cai Png 菜饭) at an extremely affordable price. There is always a super long queue outside the stall!

I like eating here because the ingredients are all very fresh and savoury. And even though the queue is long, it usually moves very fast because of the efficient staff. Best of all, the price is extremely affordable! I will usually eat at the stall but most people will dabao (pack) the food to go because of the limited seating here.

6. Tofu Lane

In my opinion, Tofu Lane is one of the best yong tau foo stall in the CBD. Every time I visit, the food never fails to disappoint me because the ingredients are all super fresh and delicious. Tofu Lane is famous for its long snaking queue during lunch hour on weekdays. Therefore, I will always go early because the queue starts forming from as early as 11.30am.

Normally, I will order dry yong tau foo with noodles, and douse it with copious amounts of chili sauce and fermented black bean sauce. The result is a savoury bowl of yong tau foo that always leaves me so satisfied. On days when I’m feeling uninhibited, I will revel in yong tau foo with the gutsy Curry Sauce or Special Spicy Soup. This savoury and spicy combination is so sinful but simply tastes so awesome!

7. “Yi Ding Hao” Hainanese Chicken Rice

If you are craving for the Chicken Rice at Yi Ding Hao Food Court, make sure you arrive early because there’s always a long queue here! And it’s not hard to see why. I love the chicken meat which is tender, juicy and savoury. The glistening chicken skin has a wonderfully smooth texture which tastes awesome in my mouth. And of course, I also enjoy the chicken rice which is aromatic and savoury.

8. “Guarantee Good” Nasi Padang

The Nasi Padang in Shenton House is located at the far end of level two, offering delicious Nasi Padang at a super affordable price. This stall is a perennial favourite among CBD workers, and it’s not difficult to see why.

I will usually revel in a hearty meal of rice with savoury curry vegetables, spicy curry fishballs, crunchy salty peanuts, and the tantalizing juicy drumstick. And yes, it tastes every bit as good as it sounds. The price is extremely affordable too – this set costs around just $4! This may not be the healthiest meal, but I always feel so satisfied after indulging in the tasty Nasi Padang.
