L’éclair Pâtisserie Café @ Dhoby Ghaut

L’éclair Pâtisserie is the first pastry cafe in Singapore to specialise in éclairs. If you are thinking the cafe sells the usual éclairs that are stuffed with cheap cream and glazed with chocolate, you would be mistaken. The two owners, Singaporeans Sarah and Michelle, are two pâtissières who travelled all the way to France to learn the art of French pastry from famed culinary school Le Cordon Bleu Paris. Amazingly, the cafe has managed to reinvent the conventional (and boring) éclairs into petite pieces of art that are almost too pretty to eat.

Artisan Cafe with an Air of Serenity

L’ÉCLAIR is located at a discrete spot on the ground floor outside Singapore Shopping Centre. While it may not be a prime location, there is an air of tranquility and peace here that makes it the perfect place to spend a quiet afternoon. Think of it as an artisan cafe with lovely attention to detail and interior design, where you can settle down at a table by the window to people-watch over a piece of pretty éclair.

The staff were all friendly and professional. When a staff saw that we were having difficulty choosing the éclairs, she promptly came over to help us out.

It was difficult to choose which éclair to order as they all looked pretty and tantalizing. Finally, we went with Earl Grey and the newly-launched Hazelnut Praline.

Earl Grey

The Earl Grey ($8) éclair by L’ÉCLAIR was glazed with a layer of chocolate, topped off with a few blueberries and dusted off with edible gold dust. So pretty! As I bit into the soft éclair, the aromatic flavour of Earl Grey filled my mouths and I was captivated. The eclair was soft and tender with a smooth texture. The sweet blueberries completed the experience. This was definitely the BEST éclair I had even eaten!

Hazelnut Praline

I finished my half of the Earl Grey éclair (Evans and I were sharing) and eagerly went for the Hazelnut Praline ($8). Evans’ fork was still hanging in mid-air when I pull his plate over.

L’ÉCLAIR’s Hazelnut Praline was a different experience from the Earl Grey éclair. Like the Earl Grey, the éclair was baked to perfection and tasted soft and tender. I enjoyed the hazelnut flavour and the subtle hint of praline, though I felt the flavours could have been stronger. On the whole, it still tasted wonderful; perhaps my expectations were now too high after having tasted the scrumptious Earl Grey éclair!

Conclusion

I am super glad we discovered L’éclair Pâtisserie. With its serene ambience, tastefully-done up space, amazingly delicious éclairs, and friendly service, it’s no wonder this is one of the most popular cafes in Singapore at the moment!
