Shanghai Four Days Itinerary (Day 4)

We woke up feeling a little glum because today was the last full day of our holiday in Shanghai. However, we tried to pick up our moods as we knew we were going to try more good food and visit more fun places today! This article was last updated on 01 Aug 2019.

Jia Jia Tang Bao 佳家汤包
Jia Jia Tang Bao ShanghaiJia Jia Tang Bao ShanghaiJia Jia Tang Bao ShanghaiFor breakfast, we headed to Jia Jia Tang Bao (佳家汤包), which is just a short ten minutes walk from People’s Square metro station.

This is a popular dumpling joint in Shanghai. We arrived at about 11.30am and there was already a short queue ahead of us. After waiting for about ten minutes, we entered the restaurant and promptly ordered the Crab Roe and Pork Dumpling (蟹粉鲜肉汤包) for 27 RMB as well as a bowl of  Seaweed Soup (紫菜蛋皮汤) for 4 RMB.

The soup arrived first and it felt really good to drink a bowl of steaming hot soup in the cold November weather.

The dumplings came after about fifteen minutes. I quickly took a bite and the juices within the dumpling spurted out into my mouth.

My verdict? These were the best dumplings in Shanghai we had had so far!

I couldn’t get enough of the savoury dumpling stock and the succulent crab roe/pork. The dumplings tasted so good I could have finished twenty by myself!

Xiao Yang Sheng Jian 小杨生煎
Yang's Dumpling ShanghaiHowever, we only ordered one set of dumplings because there was another great restaurant just across the street beckoning us – Xiao Yang Sheng Jian (小杨生煎 )!

This restaurant is famous for its pan-fried dumplings.

We ordered one plate of the pan-fried dumplings 铁板生煎包. I eagerly bit down into the crunchy skin covered with sesame seeds.

Man, it tasted good.

The savoury and thick stock within the dumpling spurted into my mouth and I savoured it gleefully. The pork within the dumpling tasted sweet and juicy. This was the best pan-fried soup dumplings I had ever tasted!

What a great morning.

Jing An Temple 静安寺
Jing An TempleJing An Temple 5After our wonderful dumplings breakfast, we headed to Jing An Temple 静安寺 (literally, Quiet and Peace Temple.

The temple is located on top of the Jing’an Temple metro station, two stops away from People’s Square station on the green line 2.

It was first built in 247 AD beside the Suzhou Creek, and subsequently relocated to its current site in 1216.

The temple was indeed majestic, but the entrance tickets were extremely pricey at 100RMB. We decided to just take a few photos outside the temple.

For lunch, we checked in at Mr Nice Café 好好先生西餐厅, which is within walking distance from Jing An Temple. We ordered the signature Smoked Salmon Shrimp Spaghetti (RMB 58) which came with a drink, as well as the super-popular Strawberry Napolean cake (RMB 38).

The pasta was decent, but the Napolean cake had us swooning from the first bite.

The luxurious smoothness of the pastry cream was punctuated by the crunch of the slightly musky puff pastry. We loved it!

Service was a little inconsistent and slow, but luckily the Napolean cake saved the day.

Qipu Road 七浦路
Qipu RoadAfter that, we headed to Qipu Road (七浦路) for some shopping. It is within walking distance from Tian Tong Metro Station (purple line 10). The shopping complex has seven floors.

When we were there, the place was packed with Chinese locals and we saw very few tourists. We discovered a sprawl of small shops selling shoes, clothes, bags, luggage, souvenirs, jewelry, toys, etc.

If you enjoy shopping at flea markets, this is definitely the place for you.

After about two hours, Raevian managed to pick up a few skirts at bargain prices, and I had finished reading the entire CNN news archives on my phone.

There were many sales people who kept pestering us to buy “authentic” branded handbags. Out of curiosity, we followed one salesman back to his store and were shown an iPad with digital photos of the “branded” handbags. We feigned interest in one of the Prada bags and got him to show us the physical item. I must say it did look pretty authentic. However, we were not interested and left the shop quickly.

Overall, it was an interesting cultural experience for me, and a nice shopping trip for Raevian.

Underground Market at “Shanghai Science & Technology Museum” Metro Station
Shanghai A.P. Xinyang Fashion & Gift MarketNext was another shopping stop.

We took the metro to Shanghai Science & Technology Museum station.

The underground market is connected to the metro station. The shopping scene here was pretty dismal compared to Qipu Road. The place was largely empty except for a handful of Caucasian tourists.

This gave the impression that the place was probably a tourist trap.

However, there were lots of fake electronics on sale, such as Bose, Beats, etc. I have the authentic BOSE Bluetooth portable speaker, so I was pretty amused when I heard a fake Bose speaker with an accented-Chinglish-voice announcing “Hi, Bose speaker is connected”.

Quan Ju De (全聚德) at Purple Mountain Hotel (紫金山大酒店)
Quanjude Shanghai 1Quanjude Shanghai 2For dinner, we headed to a restaurant that purportedly serves the best Peking Roast Duck in China, Quan Ju De (全聚德). To reach here, we took the metro to Century Avenue station on green line 2, and walked five minutes to Purple Mountain Hotel. The restaurant is located on the third level of the hotel.

Quanjude ShanghaiQuanjude Shanghai 4We ordered three dishes: a half Peking Roast Duck (RMB 128), the Braised Crab Meat and Tofu (RMB 68), and the Stewed Bullfrog in Zanthoxylum Armatum Oil (RMB 78).

For the Peking Roast Duck, a chef carved the duck into fine slices with his immaculate knife skill right beside our table.

First, he gave us the thin and crispy skin, and told us we could eat it with the sugar provided.

After a short while, he finished slicing the entire duck and the meat slices were served to us neatly on a plate. In true Beijing-style, we wrapped the meat along with scallion and cucumber sticks in the crisp pancake, and dipped it in sweet bean sauce.

It looked and tasted so good!

The meat was fresh and tender, and was complimented perfectly by the other fillings.

The Braised Crab Meat and Tofu tasted average, but we especially enjoyed the Stewed Bullfrog (RMB 78). The meat was well-prepared with no fishy smell at all, and it tasted savoury and succulent. The spicy sauce tasted great as well.

After the heavy meal, we had a glass of Westlake Longjing Tea (RMB 16) to cleanse our palates and stomachs.

The Bund 外滩
Shanghai The BundNo trip to Shanghai would be complete without a visit to The Bund (外滩).

This is a waterfront area in Shanghai which gives you a paranomic view of Shanghai’s beautiful skyline. It is a short ten minutes walk from East Nanjing Road metro station.

We were captivated by the majestic colonial buildings along the riverside.

Shanghai The BundShanghai The BundThank you Shanghai, for giving us such a fun holiday.

After a nice stroll along The Bund, we returned back to our hotel, the Waldorf Astoria Shanghai. The next day, we went for a quick lunch at Hai Di Lao again (yes we love the place), took some daytime pictures of The Bund, before reluctantly catching our flight back to Singapore.

Hi there! Really loved your posts on your Shanghai (& Suzhou, Hangzhou) trip! Just wondering, excluding airfare, approximately how much did both of you pay in total for the trip? My friend and I will be travelling there in March and would like to know how much to budget. =)
